In the band moniker department, the Ruskies come in a distant second to Burger Records’ garage-rock barrel-scrapers, Cumstain. Meanwhile, Armenia sends its venerable group Bambir, which mixes regional folk sounds with rock, South Africa represents with burgeoning DJ/drum duo Black Motion, and extravagant rock weirdos Cramp In Leg! arrive from Russia with love. Dark, angry techno producer Bjarki should not be confused with another Icelandic musician whose name starts with a “Bj,” while Lima, Peru’s Dengue Dengue Dengue offers another side of the EDM coin with tropical bass. Zooming out, SXSW’s international profile grows with acts pulled from 24 different country. Locally, 14 homegrown bands/artists jump into the scrum: Ben Ballinger, Broken Gold, Calliope Musicals, Expander, Jad Fair, Jack Ingram, Wande Isola, J-Nice the Kingdom Builder, Calvin Martyr, Moonlight Towers, Resistance, SaulPaul, Sugar Dirt & Sand, and Tinnarose. Other domestic acts added to the fray include hip indie/Americana upstarts Rayland Baxter and Robert Ellis, cartoonish punk power rangers Peelander-Z, Jewish rap humorist Lil Dicky, oft-incarcerated Chicago rapper ZMoney, and Replacements-style rockers Beach Slang. He was subsequently banned from the venue even though he revealed, a month later, that it was all a gag. ![]() The latter group, who hit town late last year as Fun Fun Fun Fest headliners, made waves at SXSW 2010 when their bassist/vocalist Fat Mike, performing as his grease-painted alter ego Cokie the Clown, made an audience at Emo’s Annex believe that he had urinated in the shots of liquor handed out to the crowd. Other new additions include Rock & Roll Hall of Fame piano man Leon Russell, Houston rap favorite Trae Tha Truth, soul-blues man Eli “Paper Boy” Reed, and punk shit-talkers NOFX. Pop’s name appears on today’s lineup announcement, which adds another 149 showcasers to SXSW’s growing roster, now at approximately 1,256. If there’s a David Bowie tribute similar to 2014’s star-studded Lou Reed send-off, the “Real Wild Child” slots in as a logical participant. ![]() Given that this won’t be the 68-year-old Muskegon, MI., native’s first time at the SXSW rodeo – he appeared solo in 1996 and with different iterations of the Stooges in 20 – chances favor the mid-week set not being his only performance during the festival. ![]() Iggy Pop (with the Stooges) at ACL Fest 2012 (Photo by John Anderson)
